Boss of All Bosses - Review

Slander's Review of the Day

"Ain't dropped in three years but I'm back. Where the money at?!" Yeah man, Slim Thug is finally getting back in the game! Contrary to those lyrics, he actually hasn't dropped an album since his debut four years ago! Slim Thug is one of the realest dude's around though, it's no surprise that he's been busy outside of music. Regardless of street cred, Boss of All Bosses has a lot to compete with to garner any of the spotlight from a myriad of more well-known Texas artists. Knowing this, Thug pulls out all the stops in terms of features. I'm not sure if you're aware of exactly what I mean by 'pulling out all the stops'. Slim Thugga has NINETEEN features on this album! We got Devin The Dude, Yelawolf, Mannie Fresh, Paul Wall, Pimp C, Bun B, J-Dawg, Z-Ro, Scarface, Killa Kyleon, Chamillionaire, Mike Jones, Lil Keke, Trae, Rob G, Lil O, Big Pokey, Mike D and Yung Redd. Despite some real Houston bangers worthy of attention, there are a lot of tracks with average beats and generic lyrics which made the album look a little forced overall. Slim Thug is clearly a thug with some talent, but a big-time hip hop artist? I'm not so sure.

Album Art

Pretty much what you'd expect from someone proclaiming the "boss" image. It's Slim Thug up close in black and white smoking a cigar. Not really anything original.

Album Length

No intros or interludes, we have a solid 13 tracks here.

Top 5

1. I Run (ft. Yelawolf)

2. Welcome 2 Houston (ft. Chamillionaire and many more)

3. I'm Back (ft. Devin The Dude)

4. Thug

5. Boss of all Bosses

Honorable Mention: I read that "I'm Back" was originally produced by Dr. Dre and his beat was so much more raw. Hopefully it gets released as a remix in the future or something.

1. I Run - The only track on the album with this sort of upbeat feel, of course due to the production by Miami's Jim Jonsin (haha, no knock on Houston's producers!). For real, this track was engineered for single status using a sample from the highly successful 1982 hit, "I Ran (So Far Away)". Slim Thug's lyrics are pretty on-point, "I'm writin' a book, how to survive in the recession. Mr. Obama, we so tired of sellin' crack, if you lookin' for me just ask the streets where I'm at." I told you, dude is real. Combine all that with both Thug and Yelawolf on a bangin' hook and you got a hit right here!

2. Welcome 2 Houston - This is the definition of why hip hop is better than every other genre in music. You read how there's 19 features on this album, well, THIRTEEN of them are on this track alone! (Features: Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Pimp C, Bun B, Lil Keke, Z-Ro, Trae, Rob G, Lil O, Big Pokey, Mike D & Yung Redd) To accompany a verse for every one of those artists, Welcome 2 Houston is close to 9 minutes long! Every verse is fire, Houston gets represented harder than I've ever seen. If you were to cop just one song from this album purely for the love of hip hop, this is the one to get. Get familiar!

3. I'm Back - Slim Thug shows what he's all about on this one. Slow-paced vibin song about the rise to riches of a gangsta. Devin The Dude hits a laid back, smooth chorus well, but unfortunately doesn't contribute much more than that. A well done song overall that'll probably fly under the radar.

4. Thug - I love the sample "He was once a thug from around the waayyy" from Eazy-E's "Eazy-Duz-It". It really gives it that extra edge. Slim Thug delivers solid lyrics on a solid beat, although his topics of discussion are starting to get a little repetitive from his other tracks.

5. Boss of all Bosses - The chorus definitely can be a bit annoying towards the end of the song, but Thug's verses are hot fire. With a pretty epic sounding beat with that Lord of the Rings' style choir in the background, this title track represents the album well.

Best Feature

Damn, I'm gonna give it up to Chamillionaire. Contributing both a verse and the hook to "Welcome 2 Houston", he does the most of any other artist on the album and keeps a 9 minute track fresh with a such a smooth chorus.

In A Perfect World... - Review

Slander's Review of the Day

Who knew about Keri Hilson before hearin' her featured on "The Way I Are"? Keri's been writing songs since 2001 for some big time artists, including Britney Spears, Madonna, Beyonce, Usher, and even Ludacris (yea I wouldn't have thought that). Anybody remember Xzibit's "Hey Now, Mean Muggin"? She had vocals on that track as well. Keri's been around for awhile, she's just never realized her potential as a singer-songwriter until now. Her debut album, In a Perfect World... is nothing short of HOT!! Seriously, we got club bangers all around mixed with some slick pop/r&b tracks, I'm feelin' this album like crazy! Features include Lil Wayne, Keyshia Cole (sick r&b tandem!), Trina, Timbaland, Kanye West, Ne-Yo and Akon. Yeah, Keri wasn't playing around when selecting hot artists to work with. Expect big things to come, this is only her first album!

Album Art

Listen up, Keri Hilson is hot, so regardless it's gonna be some damn good art haha. But real talk, she's lounging on some expensive leather chair with an ocean sunset in the background. The color alteration gives it that club feel.

Album Length

We got 14 tracks on here. First track is a 1:29 intro, which actually could've been a full length song.

Top 5

1. Turnin Me On

2. Change Me

3. Knock You Down

4. Set Your Money Up

5. Energy

Honorable Mention: "Return The Favor" is hot too, but I wasn't feeling Timbaland too much. Also, just a note, "Where Did He Go" definitely contains elements of Bobby Valentino's "Stay With Me". I don't see any documentation anywhere of that as a fact, but check the melodies. Very similar.

1. Turnin Me On - Yo, when you get Polow da Don, No I.D. and Danja all on the same track for production, this is what you get. This beat is SO tight! Keri shows off her voice and her swagger all over this track. The song woulda been a hit all by herself, but then leading into Weezy... it's just almost swag overkill (always a good thing haha). Wayne KILLS it, as usual. Top song climbin' the charts quickly.

2. Change Me - Surprisingly not a single yet, but wait for it. I love this track. It's not really Keri's strongest showing of her voice on the album, but Akon on the other hand... dude gives it his all. I've never heard him belt it like that before. Coupled with his harmonies with Keri, dammn, its just music baby! It's definitely more of a pop song, but if you're into that too, you'll love this.

3. Knock You Down - "You see that hate that they servin' on the platter, so what we gon' have dessert or disaster?" Kanye son!! Keri, Kanye and Ne-Yo all on one hot track! The beat and arrangement really aren't too special, the beat is probably the weaker aspect of the song. It's purely about Keri and the features carrying the song with some sick lyrics and contrasting flow. Kanye for MVP on this!

4. Set Your Money Up - Ever confuse Keri and Keyshia? This song definitely exemplifies Keri's attitude over your usual pop/r&b singer like Keyshia. Both girls do their thing though for sure! Which leads into.. Trina rippin it!! Self-proclaimed baddest bitch, haha, she tears the track down! Lovin' the trio on this club banger right here.

5. Energy - Lyrically? Not really the most intricate song. But is it catchy enough to get recognition? Absolutely. There's not much to the song other than appealing to the masses of pop music, and it's already an established hit soo, nice job Keri.

Best Feature

Ah, not an easy decision with such a quality selection of features. I'ma give it to Kanye West though. While Ne-Yo was a nice addition on "Knock You Down", Kanye brought it to another level. Hey maybe I'm just a fan of the dude... but I think y'all would definitely agree with me that he went hard on that track.

Don't Feed Da Animals - Review

Slander's Review of the Day

You probably know him best as the dude with the laid back baritone voice from his huge debut single "Hood Nigga". He was also featured on Yung Joc's successful "Coffee Shop" and "Bottle Poppin". Yeah boy I'm talkin' bout big Z, Gorilla Zoe. Following up modest sales on his first album, Gorilla Zoe comes out a year and half later with Don't Feed Da Animals. Zoe takes a slightly different direction with his sophomore album by taking advantage of the recent surge is auto-tune instead of relying purely on his uniquely deep voice, which I think is a mistake. Sure, almost every hip hop album nowadays uses auto-tune on one of its songs, but Zoe really doesn't need it, especially not on more than half of his tracks! It's unfortunate because between that and lackluster vision in production, most of Don't Feed Da Animals is just plain average. A few tracks stand out, but in a crowded industry with a small reputation you need more than a few above-average tracks to get noticed. Features include Rick Ross, Kollosus, JC, Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman (wtf?), Big Block, Yung Chris (wow, original), Ebonylove & Roxy Reynolds.

Album Art

Zoe's posted at his office with a cash counter stacking his money, smoking a cigar. I like it, it's how I imagine Zoe because of his style, just chillin' with his money.

Album Length

We got 14 tracks on this, just under an hour of playing time. Standard.

Top 5

1. Lost

2. Man I

3. Untamed Gorilla (ft. JC)

4. Talk Back (ft. Ebonylove & Roxy Reynolds)

5. Echo

Honorable Mention: I'm Dumb. Yes that's the song title. Really Zoe, whoever oversaw the writing of that song is dumb, and not in any sort of 'cool' way. Because of that though, it is kinda entertaining to listen to haha. The song "What It Is" is only good because of Rick Ross, so I can't really make that a top track.

1. Lost - Released way before this album, makes sense haha, it's pretty much the only song worth being a single. Production is up there and auto-tune actually works for Zoe this time. If the first 3 seconds reminds you of T.I.'s "What Up, What's Haapnin", it's because it's the same sample; Drumma Boy produced both tracks. Chorus is pretty catchy and the pre-chorus leads in very nicely. "I'm caught up in a world, a labyrinth of maze, where yes men can easily be no." Hmm, think about that line for a second. Yeah I have no idea what he's saying, and labyrinth is already a synonym for maze, but hell if I care, we need him to have at least one top song, GO ZOE!!!

2. Man I - Something about this beat and Zoe's style on this one makes it stand out. I haven't really heard another track like it and that's what we need right now in hip hop, new ideas. Props right here, even if it is mostly about the production, wouldn't be possible without Zoe's voice.

3. Untamed Gorilla - I'm feeling Zoe changing up his flow throughout this track. No auto-tune on Zoe with this one, which pretty much automatically makes it a better song than the others haha. The chorus is bangin', idk who JC is but he does his thing! Solid track overall.

4. Talk Back - Reminds me of Yung Joc's "I Know You See It", not because of the beat or production, just the whole idea of the song and the use of the female features. The beat is kinda tight, the chorus flows pretty well, overall not a bad song to vibe to. It'll never hit the radio though, for obvious lyrical reasons haha.

5. Echo - Is this hip hop or is this some sort of 80s trance featuring a large black male version of Cher? Dude I don't even know what comparison I'm trying to make, but this song is just WEIRD for a rap artist. I mean, it's not bad per se, that's why it made #5 on my top tracks, but it's like... not hip hop.

Best Feature

Ehh, no one really deserves to be known for best feature, but I'll give it Rick Ross even if he is on an average track that didn't even make my top 5 (What It Is). He's clearly the best rapper whether or not he shined with little competition.

Love v/s Money - Review

Slander's Review of the Day

"Radio Killaaaaa... R&B gorillaaaa!" One of the more talented artists in the game today, singer-songwriter and producer for tons of hits, The-Dream releases his second studio album entitled Love v/s Money, following up the success of his first album Love-Hate. I anticipate this album making it even bigger than his first. The-Dream enlists the production skills of No ID (renowned producer), Los Da Mystro (produced much of Love-Hate, and J. Holiday's hit single 'Bed'), and his old friend Tricky Stewart (who produces most of the tracks on the album). The-Dream really pulls out all the stops with voice modulating techniques and production; you can tell he put a lot of effort into this album to make it stand out from much of the imitation in the industry nowadays. Features include Kanye West, Mariah Carey and Lil Jon. Overall, I found this to be one of the best r&b albums in a long time, almost all the tracks are worthy of radio play. 2009 is still pretty young but I don't think we're gonna see other artists top this album!

Album Art

Nothing special, similar to Love-Hate, it's just a front shot of him wearing sunglasses but this time with his hands up instead of down haha. Personally I think Love-Hate's cover was cleaner and had that quality of freshness, this cover is basically a rehash.

Album Length

Okay let's get one thing straight. The first track entitled 'Money Intro' is 9 seconds of The-Dream's bed shaking back and forth. If you include that 'song' haha, there are 14 tracks on the album. Extras to iTunes include a remix to 'Rockin' That Shit' and a bonus track 'Hater'.

Top 5

1. Rockin' That Shit

2. Fancy

3. Love v/s Money

4. Mr. Yeah

5. Walkin On The Moon (ft. Kanye West)

Honorable Mention: Love v/s Money Part 2 is also an excellent song. I wanted to give the other great songs a place on my Top 5 because Love v/s Money Part 2 is obviously very similar to Part 1. The main differences between the two are the slight tweaks to the drums and different choruses. Also, Right Side of My Brain was a pretty solid track as well.

1. Rockin' That Shit - I don't have to write much about this one, it's been blastin' the radiowaves for a while now, you already know its a winner! "There's nothing I could say..." this track is just pure quality from the great production to The-Dream just being on top of everything. It's catchy and immune to sounding old, this track has staying power for sure. Oh and if anyone says the beat has elements from Bobby V's 'Hands on Me', keep in mind this track came out first!! Yeah Bobby V get your own shit haha. The-Dream baby!!

2. Fancy - Sickest production on the album. Also the longest, over 6 and half minutes long!! How can a song keep your attention for that long? The-Dream. I can't even explain how perfectly his voice matches the music and the arrangement of the song, it's beautiful. "I can see her beauty with both eyes closed". I love how the last few minutes of the song pick up with more and more energy, but I hate how it all collapses so fast with that abrupt ending! Seriously, you'd expect a song THAT long to have planned a better ending haha. Oh well I'm probably just nitpicking, it's a great song. (By the way, try fading it into 'Right Side Of My Brain', fixes that abrupt ending with a smooth transition, sounds good!)

3. Love v/s Money - "I wanted to take you home to my momma, but nope!!" The beat is TIGHT and The-Dream finally sings an emotional song but with an upbeat tempo. The best part of this track is the fact that it extends into Love v/s Money Part 2 which I think has an even more emotional chorus. We all know Plies & Ne-Yo's 'Bust It Baby Pt. 2' was a sick song but has anyone heard of 'Bust It Baby Pt. 1'? I doubt it. The-Dream proves you can make a two-part r&b song tandem and get BOTH on the album. Major props.

4. Mr. Yeah - "C-c-cupid ain't got shit on me", haha I love The-Dream. This song has a strong pop feel, but I mean most of The-Dream's tracks do so it's not a big deal. The-Dream uses his voice to bounce all over this track, stuttering with the drums, doubling and fading on certain syllables, pulling out all his techniques. The last few minutes are pretty unique where he slows the whole track down, takes out a lot of the music and just serenades his girl purely with his voice. You think he's all heartfelt until the last SECOND on the track, I won't ruin it for you but its hilarious, check it.

5. Walkin On The Moon - There's something about this track. No ID and a bunch of other producers collaborate on this gem right here. It's got this futuristic electronic/techno type beat, while still maintaining it's r&b feel. For some reason it feels like it would be on Kanye's 'Graduation' album, probably because of how Kanye raps on it. Anyway, both Kanye and The-Dream hit this track very well with contrasting flow and I'm feelin' it!

Best Feature

This wasn't much of a competition, Kanye West. 'My Love' (the song Mariah Carey was featured on) just wasn't anything special and Lil Jon didn't really add much to 'Let Me See The Booty'. Let's be serious here, Lil Jon is way past his time now, he needs to move on. But back to Mr. West, let's see more of this Kanye, this is what he's supposed to be doing!
